Munich - Week 24

We were with a member at Neuschwanstein for most of the day, which is the one really big castle, which is where the idea came for the Disney castle.
So, I could sum up our week pretty quick.
On Tuesday, Elder Carr and I went out to Landshut to work in their area for a day and to get it going. I got to work with Elder Kaufusi  He's just starting his 2nd transfer. I think we did pretty well. We found 5 new people, and taught a lesson to 2 random guys off the street in just about 2 hours of work. It was really good for a struggling area. I love being in Landshut as well. It's a special place for me.
Wednesday morning, we had to take a train back at around 7 in the morning, and we got back and were given the job to pick up Elder Hunter from the airport. He's a missionary who went home a little while ago for back problems but came back out. We went and got him from the airport and he spent the day with us. It was really fun. I enjoy that trip to the airport every time. Funny because when it comes for my final trip to the airport, I'm sure it will feel familiar, but so weird and different. We also taught F on Wednesday and went to S's house.
Thursday was transfer day. Sister Ahlm and Sister Poll and Sister Cherrington and Sister Kramer and Elder Rozan all went home. It was a couple of hard goodbye's to missionaries I've known for a long time. The hardest was Sister Cherrington. She and I had been in Munich for 4 transfers together and had so much fun and became friends.  She's awesome. I got to see Elder Howarth again which was so great. I love that kid.
So Friday came, and we had a couple lessons, and ran around all day finding people to teach. We ran out of time for weekly planning, but still didn't have much to show for anything, which sucked.
Saturday was member day. We had a service project with the A's. Moving couches and furniture to their new apartment. Then afterwards, we ate at Pizza Hut with them, then had Pfannenkuchen with another member. So another good day.
Sunday came. S GOT CALLED AS THE SECRETARY IN THE RELIEF SOCIETY. I'm so excited for her! That is SO cool. I was so happy. She's on fire. We taught like 6 lessons at church to random people at church who showed up. We're trying to see if they'll turn into new investigators. I sure hope so. Have a wonderful week!

Munich - Week 23

Things are great. I've been thinking back on my time here in Munich. I love this place. Heavenly Father has blessed us with so much success here, and it's amazing that that could happen to a couple of punk 19 year old kids in the middle of Germany. It's awesome. I would honestly spend the rest of my mission in Munich and be more than happy. I love it here more than I could tell you in an email.
Well, this week it got cold. Bitter cold. We've also got about a foot of snow that we've received in the past few days. It's been fun sliding through the empty streets of Solln (where we live) here in Munich. Today is supposed to be -12 Celsius, which is like 8 Fahrenheit I guess. Then it gets colder throughout the week. We will be in Landshut on Austausch tomorrow, which is known as the Windy City in the mission. It's supposed to be like -5 degrees Fahrenheit. Haha. Fun right? Then on Wednesday, we pick up the missionaries from the airport. Thursday is transfer day again already. I'm starting my 12th transfer. I'm so old.
By the way, transfers affected 13 of the 16 companionships in our zone, so it will be fun to work with some new people. I love that about President Kohler. He doesn't care how long you've been where you've been, or how long you've been with a companion. If he needs you somewhere else, you're on the move.
That being said, we are one of the 3 companionships unaffected by transfers. I'll be here for at least 6 more weeks. Yay! We are hoping for a couple baptisms in that short amount of time. We will go get them!
We figured something new out yesterday actually about F. He doesn't know his family. He was living on the streets in Nigeria, then found the opportunity to come here, and took it. He's had a really rough life, and it's been unreal to watch him turn 180 degrees. When I first met him, I never pictured myself standing in a baptism font with him. But that's how Heavenly Father works. F gave his testimony at church yesterday and it was very touching. He also was greeting all the members he didn't know. He's awesome, and on fire right now.
S is also doing wonderful. She invited the 4 of us over this week and cooked for us. It was really really good. She hasn't missed a week of church since her baptism, and just received her visiting teaching assignments and so forth. She's loving being a member. She's on fire as well. I think the 2 baptisms we've had here are both going to be extremely solid members of the church forever. That's enough in and of itself to make me happy.
Our teaching pool is picking up a little bit again. I finally got contact with A, and we will be teaching him this week. B and F are best friends from Nigeria and want to be baptized on the 31st. They won't make it, but we hope it will be soon. D is a new investigator this week. He's a member referral and we had THE COOLEST LESSON with him. It was so spiritually charged, and we all could feel it really strong. Including him. He was at all 3 hours of church yesterday and really enjoyed our gospel principles lesson about the mission of Jesus Christ. He's really feeling the spirit strong. We are excited for the progress.
We are teaching a few more people. A is from Germany and is the head boss of a huge project coming up here in Munich (a head corporate kind of guy). Which is very exciting. He knows the Book of Mormon is true, but is jut freaking himself out about being baptized. His parents would kick him out. We have the most powerful lessons but he just isn't pushing himself enough. We will see.
Yeah that's about it. Needless to say, things are excellent.
I've been really looking at our Time as missionaries, which could relate to time as members. When we look at it, we don't have a lot of time on this earth, and especially less time in a day. We have to make our time worth it with the things we do. Which includes fulfilling our callings, telling our family members how much we love them, performing service, working to provide, you name it. But the time we have on earth is so precious and limited before we meet God again just like Alma 34:32 says. There's my thoughts, and our week. Hope it's a good one for you!

Munich - Week 21

Things are going really good here. We have all of a sudden a lot of work to do. Which is always a good thing. Now that the holiday is over, people are ready to meet with us. We have a lot going on this week. We met with S this morning and B this afternoon. He has fallen into our hands a little bit. He was in Ingolstadt and taught there, but moved to Munich, and was working with the English Ward, but didn't enjoy it, would like to learn German. So his day is on the 24th. Hoping he will make it. We've taught him the restoration like 7 times and he doesn't really get it. So we are moving on and seeing if other lessons will be better. We will see how it goes.

Elder Carr comes from a good family in Spokane, Washington. His dad is an animal Doctor. He's the middle of 4 I believe. He's a football player, so we get along there, but a Seahawks fan, so that's where I draw the line. He's got 5 months left. He was in the MTC with Elder Howarth and Elder Killpack. Guys like that.

Elder Croft emailed this morning and has had contact with S over Facebook. We are going to see if we can get something going. We are still working on getting an appointment with M. Other than that, there isn't too much to report on.

We have a really busy week ahead of us. An MLC and a few really important appointments and then more stuff on the weekend that I'll have to fill you in on next week.

Thanks for your prayers!

Munich - Week 20

Sam Quotes from e-mails to Mom & Dad after Christmas & Skype:

Well man, this week has been crazy. I'm so stuffed!

Christmas at Bishop's was awesome. I loved being with their little girls and
enjoying the time with their family.

We had great food.

It was also just nice to experience the German tradition of opening all the gifts
on the evening of he 24th and watching the kids be so excited about everything.

Seeing you was such a wonderful experience.

Bishop and his wife got elder Carr and I ties which was way nice of them.
It really was such a great day.

If I had to name a German dish that I would love to have mom cook it would probably
be Spätzle and Blau kraut. It's way good and I think the family would like it too.

Sure sucks about the Packers.

I'm doing great and I'm really happy.

I love you!!!!!!

Munich - Week 19

Elder Hadfield, S, Elder Carr
This is the shortened up version of S's road to baptism and to conversion in the gospel and the church of Jesus Christ. It has been a miracle filled road, which you will see, and it has been incredible to experience all these little miracles and observe the changes she has made firsthand.

The story actually begins long before we knocked on S's door. In fact, it begins far before where I will begin from, but for times sake, I'll tell it from my side.

One of my first weeks in Munich, we had a Zone Conference where we talked about working better with members and the tactics we could use to improve our statistics and the overall enthusiasm of the members to help us achieve our goals and give the work a new dimension. So Elder Croft and I came home from that and said to each other, "Well, our ward is one of the more difficult ones to work with because everyone is either a brand new family which is extremely busy, or an old lady who we aren't allowed to visit alone with anyway." We discussed and analyzed the situation from a few different sides, and prayed about it together, and we came up with the answer that we needed to incorporate Preach My Gospel a little more with the members. So we made plans to do it. We called a family named the Habermann's, who was the high councilor for Passau when I was there. So I already knew him a little bit. We asked to come over and share something out of PMG. They said that was fine. We went over the next night, and they were so happy to see missionaries. It had been quite a few years since they had missionaries in their home. It was quite nice getting to know them, and looking back now, it was probably a little awkward from our side. But we talked about PMG and what it meant to us as missionaries, and invited them to read Ch. 1 together and to think about it. We left that night with such a good feeling it was hard to describe. We weren't really sure why at the time, but it's obvious looking back on it. We came back about 2 weeks later and followed up with them and talked about their trip to the Church History sites 20 years earlier and saw all their pictures and talked about what the gospel really meant to them. It was a very special appointment. We left after that without a return appointment, but felt yet again very good.

The following Sunday, October 11, our bishop gave us names of supposed members that had moved in and we were to go by on them and invite them to church. The first person didn't actually live there and the second wasn't home. We found ourselves in a corner of our area we had never been in before, and we had about 15 minutes before we had to catch a bus to our next appointment. So we started dooring the apartment buildings. We got done with about 15 doors and we were ready to leave, but walking back, we both kind of stopped right in the middle of the courtyard and looked at the row of apartment buildings across from us. Numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Elder Croft said, 'Which house do we need to do?' Without much hesitation, I said, "Number 8." I don't know why it was number 8, but that's just what flowed out of my mouth. We rang the first doorbell there and got a door slammed in our faces. At this point, I think we were both thinking the same thing. We were ready to walk out and go teach our appointment. But we both kept walking up the stairs to the next door. We rang and out popped S. We told her we had a video to show about Christ and His life, and she said, 'Oh, you have it easy with me, I'm already Christian.' We watched the video and she loved it. We talked really shortly about the restoration with her, and left her with tears in her eyes, and a Book of Mormon in her hands, with a return appointment for later that week. We weren't extremely sure if anything would come from it, but we both really hoped something would.

The time came for our return appointment, and we could not get a hold of her. She wasn't answering her phones and we just thought she was ignoring us. Which would sadly be a common occurrence here. So we were stacked with appointments and deemed it a waste of time to drive all the way out to her if she wasn't going to be home. So we didn't go.

The following week I was on Austausch with Elder Jensen who now lives in the office. He and I had been contacting in the rain all day and had no success. We had an appointment with a new guy who lived a couple miles from S and when we went out there, the appointment fell out. We were both kind of ready to go home, and it was time to go home, but I felt that tug. The tug that says, 'No, there's another reason I sent you
here.' So I followed it to S's front door. She answered and told us that sadly her phone hadn't been working. She had waited for us the week before and we just hadn't come. I was so bummed. I felt so bad. She told us she had been reading but not fully understanding. So we set a return appointment and left for the night. We almost let her slip through the cracks, but caught her in time. Thank heavens.
So we came to this appointment with our GML, Jonathan Brons, and taught her about the Restoration which went great. She really understood it and that solid understanding of where the Book of Mormon comes from helped her to want to read more. She had some great insights to the first vision, because one time she had a motorcycle accident and had the whole life flash before eyes, bright white light, see that her life wasn't finished on earth, get thrown back experience. She said it was for sure possible that it could have happened. Great appointment, so we set up a new one and left.

The second appointment, we had the feeling to call Br. Habermann, the guy whom we had met with. So we tried him but he couldn't make it, and was quite abrupt with us on the phone. We called a YSA/RM and had him come with us. It was a great lesson. We taught what we call our TRIPOD lesson, which is just the 3 things we do to receive answers and build our testimonies (Read, Pray, Go to Church). It was great yet again. So we set another appointment up to come later that week.

This time, we both felt again to call Br. Habermann. So we did, and he seemed a little hesitant, but told us he would come. (We learned later that he had canceled a family gathering to come with us that night). He came, and we had the most beautiful lesson that we could have had. To this day, S can't stop talking about the Plan of Salvation and it's because of this lesson. It was actually the first lesson we had after I had had a very crappy week and was stressed out and wondering why I was experiencing so much adversity. In this lesson, we were talking about the first half of the plan, up to our life on earth, and Br. Habermann asked if he could tell a story. He told the one about the missionary who had this dream of himself in the preexistence, where he had this friend who said, 'Find me', while he was on earth and then found him. S welled up with tears in her eyes, and said, 'It's been so long since someone cared for me, or was ever there for me.' Then I just felt it. Like a dagger. A total reminder of, 'This is why you're here, and is this is what the Savior would be doing if He was here.' That's when I was overwhelmed by emotions and we just sat there crying together.

She slowly began to understand why she was experiencing what she was experiencing. She came to Stake Conference, which I'm sure wasn't easy, and loved Sister Kohler's testimony about sending a son out on a mission. She understood exactly what we were doing and why we happened to knock on her door. She wanted with all her heart to be baptized before Christmas. She gave up coffee even though it seemed hard to her. She went cold turkey with coffee. (: She kept coming to church, and her last hump was to talk to her children and family about changing churches and being baptized. She did a very good job of it, and it all worked out in the end.

The confirmation was yesterday, and she asked me to perform it. I don't remember the last time I laid hands on someone's head and the words came so clearly. It will be an experience to remember my whole life.

There is the story of S. She's been marvelous, and the Lord really does work 'in small and simple ways, that confound the wise.' It confounds me for sure every time. He is able to do His own work, I'm sure of that. He just gives me the blessing of helping, which I'm sure is frustrating for Him sometimes. I have not put life on pause for 2 years to serve the Lord. I am living the dream right now. I love being a part of this work, and would do it forever. (:

Thanks for all of your support. I love you all. Have a very Merry Christmas!! It's all true!

S Smith (mother of Sister Smith who went home with Elder Croft, touring the mission with their daughter and in Munich on Sunday sent this to me bright & early!): "my. He's amazing. After playing the hymns he gave a newly baptized sister the Holy Ghost. I didn't understand the blessing but the spirit was very very strong. He's a great missionary. He then played the piano for the primary kids to sing their Christmas song...And his companion is helping translate. Awesome elders!"

Munich - Week 18

December 14, 2015

Hey everybody!

What a week! I have so much I could write about that I could probably go on for hours on end. (:

We had the chance to pick up new missionaries from the airport on Wednesday. This new group is so cool. Elder Kaufusi is in this group, the brother of the BYU football player, who is playing football at BYU himself. He and I have an exchange coming up, that'll be really cool. We have got some awesome missionaries. Thursday was transfer day, people coming and going of course. We had quite a fun time with that. I got Elder Carr, who is a stud from Washington. He's great. We're having a blast together. Thursday night, I had to say goodbye to Elder Croft. I'll be honest. It was harder to say goodbye to him than it was to leave home for the first time. I didn't want to let that kid go. I love him man...

But all is well in Zion. Elder Carr and I have had a great few first days together. We found a guy on the street named A who committed to baptism on our first day together. That was really cool. We're doing great together. Among all these events, we taught 18 lessons this week and found 14 new people. The work is just for some reason really thriving here right now.

In the big news.... S got baptized!!! (: We were so excited for her. We gave her a blessing this week that she would be healed so that she could get baptized. By Sunday, she was miraculously off the crutches and ready to get in the water. She was so excited and nervous and all the above, but she did it. I'll prepare the whole story of her for next week's email. It's so cool to be able to find somebody and teach them the gospel and have them make covenants. It's a miracle that it ever happens. I'm excited for her.

Elder Hadfield, S, Elder Croft

Goodbye Elder Croft!

Then the next day after Elder Croft flew out, the office elders came home from the airport with pictures and they had a bunch of Elder Croft on the other side of security where he was just still talking to people. That was a powerful image.

Christmas Markets - Munich 2015

Elder Hadfield & Elder Carr - New Companion!

Hadfield & Croft

Ward Christmas Party!

Hey everybody!
Things are going excellent! We've had yet another great week in the paradise of Munich. We're very excited about the things that are happening and hope it continues.
S has been letdown after letdown. We have not heard his voice or seen him since the tithing lesson. I think he needs time. Time to work it all out in his head and figure it out in his heart.

S:  More bad news. She's doing just fine. We've finished all the lessons and everything, we've just been waiting for the day of her baptism. She was on her way to the ward Christmas party and had a little fall. On her face. She's bumped up her teeth and head, elbows, and knees. We're worried about her for sure. She's very positive about the whole thing, but we haven't seen her since. She couldn't make it to church yesterday. She's still excited, but it might have to be moved another week if she's not doing okay.

M: Great news. We're done with the lessons basically. He is doing great. We taught him the Law of Chastity, The Word of Wisdom, and Tithing in 3 days last week because we felt like he could handle it, and handle it he did. He's been doing awesome. We're excited for him as well.
That's about it investigator wise. We had a great Christmas party with the ward. Had a couple former investigators come and take part. It'll be interesting to see what happens there. I'm excited for the next couple weeks. At the Christmas party, I managed to drop a heavy table from about the height of my head onto my toe while trying to move children out of the way. It's broken. But it has really pretty colors. (:

I'm getting Elder Carr this transfer!! I don't know him, but I've heard he is so cool. He and I have talked once for sure, but I'll be getting to know him better starting Thursday. I'm excited. Until then, Elder Croft and I have a ton of work to get done. Things are great. Your prayers are very much appreciated. I love you all. Keep doing great things!

Munich - Week 16

November 29, 2015

Hey Everybody!

I hope you're all doing well. Things are great here. It's getting cold and snowy.

The Christmas season is in full swing here in Munich. They've got the Christmas market set up and expect 3 million visitors before Christmas. We have a finding day there in a couple weeks, so that should be extremely cool. I love this time of the year. Thanksgiving was more or less uneventful. By that, I mean that we didn't have it. But that's quite alright. We're doing far more important things than stuffing our faces with food. On Thanksgiving, we had one of those days where nothing was going on, so we planned to go dooring for 5 hours. We woke up that morning and it was snowing, below freezing, and wet as could be. Without a second thought, we went out and did it. It's one of those experiences that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy, but at the same time, you wouldn't take it back for anything. We didn't have success, but we had so much fun just talking about crap and freezing our butts off. I loved it even though my toes were frozen, I was wet, it was windy, we were getting doors slammed in our faces. Oh, it was so much fun. It was one of those days where we walked around talking about how hot our wives are going to be for the work we're doing at that moment. It was awesome.

Naja, let's look at investigators.

1. S: We got a text from him yesterday that said something along the lines of, 'I don't know what you guys think of me now, but no God would expect money out of people.' So he is obviously lacking understanding of the whole tithing thing. The sad thing is we were halfway through teaching it and he got up and left because he had to go to work. It was so unexpected. Since then, he's been ignoring our phone calls and everything. I don't know if it will work out for him. Pray for a change of heart please. I love this guy.

2. S: She's going to make the 13th with ease. She was at church yesterday without us calling to invite her to come. She's a social butterfly at church and we get a kick out of watching it. We taught her tithing this week and the Bishop came with so it was a great experience. She had already found out a lot about it and committed herself to it, so it was pretty easy on us. Her baptism interview is this week and then next week, she'll get baptized.

3. M: Also doing really well. We actually just got done teaching him. He's awesome. Turns out there is some issues with one of the commandments that we weren't really expecting, but he's going to work on it. We'll see how it works out. We predict him having some issues with tithing as well, so we'll do our best, and see what happens. I hope he makes the 19th though.

We set another date with a guy named F this week. He's Nigerian, so we're going to give him to the office elders from the international ward, but he's been really cool to teach. Naja, that was our week.

Things are really good. I'm doing fine. No worries. (:
Have a good week, I'd love to hear from ya'll!

Happy December!
